Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
OK a bit headline grabbing and simplistic but when the “top six” are having their biggest shake up, apart from Liverpool it seems a bit of a pattern is emerging. With Man Utd tearing City a new one, Liverpool unbeaten, Leicester 2nd, Chelsea doing reasonable with youth, Wolves speed and Newcastle all hitting hard and fast on the break it seems a turning point and a breaking of the love feast for Tiki-Taka football. No wonder combined with woeful set pieces we are struggling, apart from manager, owner, stadium, recruitment etc etc

We play timid tippy-tappy, straight from the school of Don Howe.

This is a great shame, I really liked What we do in the Shadows and his portrayal of Korg was excellent.

"Anderson used to use his pace. He was really important as an outlet. But for some reason, hes stopped using it"

Agreed, proper infuriating as he is so quick with the ball at his feet and is when he is at his most dangerous.

Anderson used to use his pace. He was really important as an outlet. But for some reason, he’s stopped using it. Instead, he slows the game down and tries to look for a killer pass, which usually doesn’t come to anything.

Has he been told to do that? Or is he doing that because he was frustrated because he was playing on his wrong side, and he didn’t feel it was working?

Either way, it gives the defence plenty of time to set, when we should be running them ragged like we do when Antonio has the ball.

Tiki-taka football is all about passing the ball skillfully around and depriving the opposition of possession until they make a mistake and let you carve them apart.

We pass the ball around until WE make a mistake, and then the opposition carve us apart.

It's more fucki-fuckup football.

Or in our case moderately technical players with no brains.

Yeah it's much more exciting watching players aimlessly sprinting about like headless chickens than it is watching technically gifted players with a brain.

Speed cost money. So yes. We’re fucked.!

Pellegrini has what they call the "innovator's dilemma" .

He had tactics, a system and style of play that was developed and proved successful at several clubs and as a result became blind to the game changing ( Dortmund and the "heavy metal" football of Klopp etc.) and now is stubbornly sticking with it believing it will work again. And like companies that fail to see changes in the market and young innovators ( e.g. Kodak, high street retailers... versus Amazon's online model) the company fails and eventually goes out of business. Same will happen to Pellegrini and co.

Sullivan also too old and not a man who understands football and is also blind to the way the game has changed and thus picking a "yesterday's man" with a system and tactics that are out of date. Also not realising it takes a program of continual improvement and investment and not one transfer window even if you get a good progressive manager. The analogy is buying an old top of the line Jag. Looks nice enough but has dated engineering and engine that cannot complete with a modern car and breaks down a lot.

Our biggest weakness and it has been so since Slav's second season is the way we give the ball all to easily all over the pitch. At any level of football you cannot do that and not ship goals at an alarming rate as we do. Also having the pace of snails throughout the team and not tackling doesn't help either.

The allergy we seem to have to width is equally bonkers. Why buy a striker like Haller if you're not going to serve him up some crosses ? Pure daft.

Re: Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
Of course it's deliberate. It's the managers tactics. Doesn't believe in crosses, second balls, getting the opposition defense turned or any kind of direct play.
It's just pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass pass until we can walk it into the net.
Unfortunately it results in pass pass pass lost it, chase back, kick off. Repeat.

Re: Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
Anderson has got pace. What is incomprehensible is why he and others seem so reluctant to use it. How many times do you see us go on the break only for the whole thing to peter out while we're mincing about. It happens so often you're left wondering if it's deliberate. Bonkers.

Agree on the inverted wingers thing though, and I absolutely hate it.

Re: Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
Speed is one thing, but we also have the dumbest squad in the league.

How many second balls or aerial duals do we win in a match? Under 20% I imagine.

Only team worse than us at it - or equally shit - is Arsenal.

We’d do far worse than get a Curbishley, Allardyce or Moyes in to work with the squad on that sort of thing. Even on a consultancy basis.

Re: Tiki-Taka is dead. Speed is the answer are we doomed?
We have pace in sub standard players like Masuaku and Fredericks. In areas where pace is vital (esp given the way we set up), like the inverted wingers, we have no pace. Middle of the park, we have no athletes (Dec is brilliant but merely young, he's no machine like Herderson, Ndidi or Wanyama, Sanchez is barely bigger than Noble, who himself is small in stature).

It's all a fucking mess. I wouldn't be surprised if Roberto wasn't the quickest over 100m at the club. That's how fucking stupid our coaching set up seem to be when it comes to what's required in this league to be effective.
